The Deeper Journey of the Wisemen
Preface:
Every Christmas I love hearing the story of the birth of Jesus. I have loved the story for as long as I can remember it as my parents told it to me and I have told it to my children. One part of the story that always intrigued me was these mysterious wiseman and kings who came to worship the King of kings and bring wonderful gifts. Why was the effort taken to put this in the story and then so little details about who they were. As I grew up, I found dissonance in the story. When learning history in school, it seemed ancient societies were isolated from one another. The ancient world seemed disconnected with little commerce of resources, technology and knowledge. Each society growing independently from the other. Luckily, with improved archaeology and growth in the sciences we see how completely incorrect the assumptions were.
I invite you to enjoy the story of the wisemen and then as your curiosity grows I invite you to dig deeper into the index and footnotes were I endeavor to share with you the growing mass of archeology, information and documentation that shows how much more sophisticated and connect the ancient societies were and how the story of the wiseman has much deeper significance and importance in the story of Jesus’s birth than we realize. When Jesus spoke in John 10: 16 of other sheep which are not of this fold. Perhaps he was not just speaking metaphorically or of a rough knowledge of other people around the world, but perhaps he had a much closer and real knowledge, and he really knew his sheep in every society around the world and the wisemen are the link to that story.
I hope this inspires further research as this story will continue to grow not only from the research of great scientist, but as our hearts grow closer to him and more is revealed.
Helaman 16: 13-14
13 But it came to pass in the ninetieth year of the reign of the judges, there were great signs given unto the people, and wonders; and the words of the prophets began to be fulfilled.
14 And angels did appear unto men, wise men, and did declare unto them glad tidings of great joy; thus in this year the scriptures began to be fulfilled.
3 Nephi 1: 1-3
1 Now it came to pass that the ninety and first year had passed away and it was six hundred years from the time that Lehi left Jerusalem; and it was in the year that Lachoneus was the chief judge and the governor over the land.
2 And Nephi, the son of Helaman, had departed out of the land of Zarahemla, giving charge unto his son Nephi, who was his eldest son, concerning the plates of brass, and all the records which had been kept, and all those things which had been kept sacred from the departure of Lehi out of Jerusalem.
3 Then he departed out of the land, and whither he went, no man knoweth; and his son Nephi did keep the records in his stead, yea, the record of this people.
